Savannakhet Province Marks World Water Day 2025

Full Description
Savannakhet, Lao PDR – April 8, 2025 – In honor of World Water Day 2025, the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Savannakhet Province organized a comprehensive celebration at Somboun Primary School, located in Ban Bueng Wa, Kaysone Phomvihane District. The event served as a dynamic platform to promote awareness on water conservation, environmental protection, and the importance of sustainable development in local communities.

The ceremony was formally opened by Mr. Boulika Inthirath, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment, who was joined by provincial and district-level officials, including heads and deputy heads of various departments, technical staff, community leaders, educators, and parents. The gathering reflected a strong cross-sectoral commitment to environmental issues, involving both government and grassroots stakeholders.

In his opening address, Mr. Inthirath stressed the vital importance of preserving water resources as a shared responsibility. “Water is essential for life and development. We must work hand in hand—government agencies, communities, schools, and individuals—to ensure that our rivers and water sources remain clean, abundant, and protected for generations to come,” she stated. She urged all attendees to promote environmental stewardship and unite in supporting national efforts toward building a green, clean, and resilient Laos.

Following the opening remarks, Ms. Panthip Rachajak, Head of the Department of Water Resources and Meteorology, delivered a keynote speech highlighting the history and global significance of World Water Day. “Water is not only a resource; it is the foundation of all aspects of life. It drives agriculture, industry, energy production, and public health. Our wetlands and river ecosystems also sustain biodiversity and food security,” she noted. Ms. Panthip emphasized that safeguarding these ecosystems is critical for achieving water security, adapting to climate change, and meeting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The celebration featured a variety of educational and community-centered activities designed to engage students and villagers in hands-on environmental action. Highlights included:

1. Student Performances: Songs and cultural dances with environmental themes performed by pupils from Sombun Primary School.

2. Interactive Quiz Games: Focused on water conservation, environmental facts, and climate awareness.

3. Clean-Up Campaign: Participants, including students, teachers, and officials, took part in a school and roadside clean-up drive, promoting the message of shared responsibility in maintaining a clean environment.

In a gesture of solidarity and support for education, the Director of Bueng Hua Middle School presented several sets of learning materials to the Principal of Sombun Primary School, witnessed by attending dignitaries. This donation symbolizes the ongoing commitment to capacity building and environmental education among the province’s youth.

The event concluded with a call to action for everyone—especially the younger generation—to become ambassadors for water and environmental conservation. Through this celebration, Savannakhet Province reaffirmed its dedication to building a sustainable future rooted in awareness, education, and strong community collaboration.
