Community-Driven Watershed Management in Ban PhiaKa
Project Location
Phiaka Village, Champhone District, Savannakhet Province, Lao PDR
Project Description
The IWRM-EbA Project is a collaborative initiative led by UNDP Lao PDR in partnership with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE) to enhance climate resilience and promote sustainable water and land resource management in two of Laos’ most vulnerable regions: the Xe Bang Hieng River Basin and Luang Prabang City. These areas are increasingly affected by floods, droughts, and environmental degradation, posing serious risks to local communities, biodiversity, and ecosystems. Unsustainable land use, deforestation, and climate change further threaten water security and the livelihoods of those dependent on natural resources. To address these challenges, the project focuses on strengthening governance, restoring degraded ecosystems, and implementing nature-based solutions that enhance resilience against extreme weather events. A key aspect of the project is protecting headwater forests and riparian zones, which play a crucial role in maintaining water security, regulating floods, and preserving biodiversity. Additionally, the project actively engages with local communities, raising awareness and building capacity to ensure that environmental stewardship and sustainable practices are integrated into local policies and decision-making. Through this collaborative and science-driven approach, the IWRM-EbA Project is working towards a sustainable and climate-resilient future for Laos
Project Outcomes & Impacts
On February 20, the IWRM-EbA Project joined forces with the Office of Natural Resources & Environment and the Office of Agriculture & Forestry in Champhone District, Savannakhet Province, to host a consultation meeting on developing a watershed management regulation with a community participation model. This Activity Held in Ban Phai Ka, the meeting brought together local villagers from Phika and Lambong, head of village, district officials, and key stakeholders—chaired by the Deputy Mayor of Champhone District. Together, we discussed draft regulations and community-led initiatives to ensure the sustainable use and protection of the Nong Huai-Nong Pen watershed.
🌱 Why This Matters
✅ Establishing clear regulations for watershed management in partnership with local communities
✅ Forming a dedicated committee to oversee the protection and sustainable use of natural water resources
✅ Encouraging active participation from surrounding villages to preserve ecosystems for future generations
With a community-led approach, we aim to protect wetlands, water resources, and biodiversity—ensuring they remain healthy, sustainable, and equitably shared for years to come!
Let’s work together for a greener future! 🌏✨
