Empowering Communities to Protect Forests and Natural Resources

Project Location
MeungHong and NaJanYai Village, Xonnabouly District, Savannakhet Province
Project Description
The Integrated Water Resources Management and Ecosystem-Based Adaptation (IWRM-EbA) project is dedicated to enhancing climate resilience and promoting sustainable management of natural resources in vulnerable areas, including the Xe Bang Hieng River Basin and Luang Prabang City. By combining ecosystem-based approaches with integrated water resource management, the project supports local communities and authorities in adapting to climate change while protecting vital ecosystems. In June 2025, the IWRM-EbA project played a crucial role in supporting community-driven forest protection efforts in Chonburi District, particularly in Muang Hong and Nai Nai Villages. This activity involved training village forest patrol teams and equipping them with mobile technologies such as GPS devices and monitoring applications to improve the monitoring of forests and natural resources. The project also facilitated coordination among government offices, community organizations, and law enforcement agencies to strengthen forest management and environmental protection efforts.

Through these collaborative efforts, the project helps local stakeholders prevent and respond to forest fires, combat illegal logging and land encroachment, and foster inclusive community participation. By empowering communities with practical tools and knowledge, the IWRM-EbA project advances adaptive management practices that contribute to long-term environmental sustainability and climate resilience.
Project Outcomes & Impacts
🌳 Empowering Communities to Protect Forests and Natural Resources 🌱

From June 6–11, 2025, the Office of Agriculture and Forestry and the Office of Natural Resources and Environment of Chonburi District, in collaboration with the IWRM-EbA Project, led a vital initiative to strengthen forest protection and natural resource management in Muang Hong and NaJanYai Villages. 👥 With active participation from village organizations, community members, and key district offices—including the Women’s Union, Youth Office, District Police, and local patrol committees—this workshop focused on:

🔹 Training local forest patrol inspection teams to use project-provided mobile phones and tools for monitoring forests, natural resources, and preventing forest fires.
🔹 Distributing uniforms and gear to patrol teams for improved visibility and safety.
🔹 Holding joint meetings to review local regulations and discuss best practices for protecting water sources, forests, and ecosystems using GPS and mobile apps.
🔹 Planning monthly coordination meetings to identify and solve issues in conservation areas.
🔹 Creating firebreaks to prevent wildfires in this high-risk zone.
🔹 Promoting stronger community involvement in sustainable forest management and stopping illegal logging and land encroachment.

🌍 This effort is part of the Integrated Water Resources Management and Ecosystem-Based Adaptation (IWRM-EbA) Project—supporting long-term climate resilience and environmental sustainability in the Xe Bang Hieng River Basin and Luang Prabang City.

Together, we’re building stronger, greener, and more resilient communities. 💪🌱
