Project Description
The Integrated Water Resources Management and Ecosystems-Based Adaptation (IWRM-EbA) Project is a collaborative initiative led by UNDP Lao PDR in partnership with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE). The project aims to enhance climate resilience and promote the sustainable management of land and water resources in two highly vulnerable regions: the Xe Bang Hieng River Basin and Luang Prabang City. These areas are increasingly affected by climate change, experiencing more frequent and severe floods, droughts, and water scarcity, which threaten both the environment and local livelihoods.
To address these challenges, the IWRM-EbA Project integrates ecosystem-based adaptation approaches with sustainable water resource management. By restoring natural ecosystems, improving water infrastructure, and strengthening local governance, the project helps regulate water flow, reduce flood risks, and maintain soil fertility. A key focus is on supporting local communities, especially those most vulnerable to climate change, by improving access to water, promoting sustainable agriculture, and building capacity for effective resource management.
Key project activities include the construction of groundwater wells and the installation of solar-powered water pumps to ensure a reliable water supply for communities. Additionally, the project supports the distribution of water storage tanks to villages facing seasonal water shortages. Training and awareness programs are also provided to empower local stakeholders with the knowledge and skills needed for climate adaptation and sustainable resource management. Collaboration with local authorities, private sector partners, and community members ensures that the project’s efforts are sustainable and effective in the long term.
Through these initiatives, the IWRM-EbA Project is building a future where communities can adapt to climate change, ecosystems are protected, and water resources are managed sustainably. By combining scientific approaches, policy implementation, and community-driven solutions, the project contributes to a more resilient and water-secure Lao PDR. 💧🌍✨

Project Outcomes & Impacts
From January 25 - 28, 2025, the Integrated Water Resources Management and Ecosystem-Based Adaptation (IWRM-EbA) project supported the distribution of water storage tanks in target districts across Savannakhet province. These included Sung Khone, Chon Buri, Champhone, Nong, and Sepon districts.
🚰 In collaboration with Champa Private Enterprise and the Natural Resources and Environment Office teams, we worked closely with village authorities to distribute the tanks to six target villages. This effort will ensure better water access, especially during the dry season. Project Objectives
✅ Provide water storage tanks to six villages to support communities during times of water scarcity.
✅ Monitor and oversee the distribution process to ensure efficient delivery.
We are proud of the progress made and grateful to all stakeholders involved in making this initiative a success! 🎉 Together, we are strengthening climate resilience against floods and droughts in Lao PDR.
