πŸŒπŸ’§ Integrated Solutions for Floods and Droughts Resilience in Savannakhet Province πŸŒπŸ’§

Project Location
Chonburi District, Champhone District, and Songkhon District, Savannakhet Province
Project Description
The Integrated Water Resources Management and Ecosystems-Based Adaptation (IWRM-EbA) Project is a collaborative initiative led by UNDP Lao PDR in partnership with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE). The project aims to enhance climate resilience and promote the sustainable management of land and water resources in two highly vulnerable regions: the Xe Bang Hieng River Basin and Luang Prabang City. These areas are increasingly affected by extreme weather events, such as floods and droughts, which threaten both local communities and ecosystems.

To address these challenges, the IWRM-EbA Project takes a nature-based approach by integrating ecosystem conservation into water resource management. By preserving biodiversity, restoring natural ecosystems, and improving water infrastructure, the project helps regulate water flow, reduce flood risks, and maintain soil fertilityβ€”ensuring long-term environmental sustainability. At the same time, it directly benefits local communities by improving access to clean water, supporting sustainable agricultural practices, and empowering stakeholders to participate in resource management.

Through collaboration between government agencies, development partners, and local communities, the project strengthens climate resilience while ensuring a balance between environmental protection and socio-economic development. By combining scientific research, traditional knowledge, and community engagement, the IWRM-EbA Project is paving the way for a future where people and nature thrive together. πŸ’¦βœ¨
Project Outcomes & Impacts
From 19–22 January 2025, the Department of Water Resources, in collaboration with the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Savannakhet Province, district-level offices, village authorities, and representatives from UNDP Lao PDR, conducted a site inspection of six new groundwater wells under the IWRM-EbA project.

The inspection took place across Chonburi District, Champhone District, and Sungkhon District to monitor the progress of drilling and construction. With support from DML Irrigation, Bridge, and Infrastructure Design and Construction Company Limited, the team worked closely to ensure that construction meets the highest standards and contributes to the following goals:

βœ… Assessing construction quality and contract compliance
βœ… Collecting feedback from local communities
βœ… Providing recommendations for improvements

These groundwater wells are a vital step towards sustainable water resource management, helping communities adapt to the impacts of climate change while addressing environmental challenges. By combining government efforts, community voices, and expert input, we’re building stronger, more resilient communities for a better future! πŸ’¦βœ¨
