Promoting Climate Awareness and Wetland Resilience in Luang Prabang

Project Location
Souphanouvong University, Santiphab and Pongkham High School - Luangprabang City, LuangPrabang Province
Project Description
The Integrated Water Resources Management and Ecosystem-Based Adaptation (IWRM-EbA) Project, implemented by the Department of Water Resources under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE) with support from UNDP and funding from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the Least Developed Countries Fund (LDCF), aims to strengthen climate resilience in Lao PDR through integrated land and water resource management. Focusing on the Xe Bang Hieng River Basin and Luang Prabang City, the project promotes the use of Ecosystem-Based Adaptation (EbA) and Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) to address increasing climate risks such as floods, droughts, and ecosystem degradation. It works to build local and institutional capacity, restore critical ecosystems like wetlands, and engage a wide range of stakeholders including local authorities, development partners, communities, schools, youth, and the private sector. From 14-16 May 2025, a major awareness-raising campaign was conducted in Luang Prabang to promote understanding of climate change and encourage community-driven solutions. Activities included workshops, climate fresco exercises, drawing competitions, poster sessions, and tree planting with students from Santiphab and Pongkham high schools. Through partnerships with GRET and the WISE Project, this initiative highlights the power of education, community engagement, and nature-based solutions in building a sustainable, climate-resilient future for Lao PDR.
Project Outcomes & Impacts
From 14–16 May 2025, the Department of Water Resources (MONRE), in partnership with UNDP Lao PDR, GRET, and the WISE Project, will lead an engaging multi-day awareness campaign in Luang Prabang City under the Integrated Water Resources Management and Ecosystem-Based Adaptation (IWRM-EbA) Project.
🔊 This initiative aims to raise public understanding of the climate-related risks facing Luang Prabang—especially flooding, drought, and wetland degradation—while promoting practical ecosystem-based solutions that involve local stakeholders and youth and aims to:
âś… Enhance knowledge of climate impacts and adaptation strategies among local authorities, students, and community leaders
âś… Encourage multi-stakeholder dialogue on wetland restoration and urban resilience
âś… Engage youth through interactive sessions including climate games, creative arts, and environmental learning zones
âś… Strengthen community commitment to sustainable land and water management
By bringing the next generation into the conversation, this activity nurtures climate leadership from the ground up. With support from trained facilitators and local teachers, students will take part in fun and meaningful activities—from tree planting to climate drawing competitions—helping them visualize and shape the future of their environment.
Together, we’re building a more resilient, sustainable Luang Prabang—where people and nature thrive.
