Protecting Headwater Forests & Restoring Degraded Forests
Project Location
MuangHong and NaJanYai villages, Xonnabuly District, Savannakhet Province
Project Description
The Integrated Water Resources Management and Ecosystem-Based Adaptation (IWRM-EbA) Project is a collaborative initiative led by UNDP Lao PDR in partnership with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE). The project aims to enhance climate resilience and promote the sustainable management of land and water resources in two of Laosβ most vulnerable regions: the Xe Bang Hieng River Basin and Luang Prabang City. These areas face increasing threats from extreme weather events, including floods and droughts, which endanger local communities, biodiversity, and ecosystems. By integrating nature-based solutions and policy-driven approaches, the project seeks to strengthen water and land resource governance, restore degraded ecosystems, and implement measures that reduce climate-related risks. A key focus is on protecting headwater forests and riparian zones, ensuring long-term water security and ecosystem health. Additionally, the project engages local communities by fostering awareness, capacity building, and policy support to enhance environmental stewardship. Through this integrated approach, the IWRM-EbA project contributes to a sustainable and climate-resilient future, safeguarding natural resources and improving livelihoods for generations to come.
Project Outcomes & Impacts
From February 5-12, 2025, as part of the Integrated Water Resources Management and Ecosystem-Based Adaptation in the Xe Bang Hieng River Basin and Luang Prabang City (IWRM-EbA) project, the Office of Agriculture and Forestry and the Office of Natural Resources and Environment of Chonburi District, Savannakhet Province collaborated with key district organizations, village leaders, and local residents from Muang Hong and Najan Naing villages. Together, they carried out activities to mark boundaries and install symbols as part of the forest management plans, successfully concluding the initiative.
π Objectives:
β Mark the boundaries and install signage and symbols as per the approved forest type maps and forest management plans.
β Raise awareness and foster a sense of ownership among villagers about the importance of conserving riparian forests, supported by community-led regulatory efforts.
π§ This initiative is a step towards safeguarding Headwater Forests and restoring degraded forest areas. By protecting the land surrounding our water sources, we ensure the sustainable use of these vital ecosystems for generations to come.
