"Training on Forest Fire Prevention and Suppression for Target Communities under the IWRM-EbA Project"
Project Location
Xonnabuly, Nong, and Sepon, Savannakhet Province 🌿🌏
Project Description
The Integrated Water Resources Management and Ecosystem-Based Adaptation (IWRM-EbA) Project aims to strengthen the resilience of ecosystems and communities in Savannakhet Province, Lao PDR, particularly in the face of climate-related risks such as forest fires, droughts, and environmental degradation. Supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the project focuses on sustainable natural resource management, climate change adaptation, and disaster risk reduction.
One of the key components of the project is building local capacity in forest fire prevention and suppression. From 20 to 27 March 2025, training sessions were conducted for government authorities and community representatives from the three target districts—Choen Buri, Nong, and Sepon. These sessions aimed to enhance understanding of forest fire risks, improve emergency preparedness, and equip participants with practical knowledge and tools to prevent and respond to forest fires effectively.
By promoting community-based forest management and strengthening local response mechanisms, the IWRM-EbA project contributes to protecting biodiversity, improving air quality, and safeguarding the livelihoods of rural populations, all while supporting Lao PDR’s commitment to sustainable development and climate resilience.

Project Outcomes & Impacts
🌲🔥 Forest Fire Prevention and Protection in Three Target Districts: Xonnabuly, Nong, and Sepon, Savannakhet Province 🌿🌏
The growing impact of PM 2.5 and smog has significantly affected public health, air quality, and the environment 🌍. As forest fires and deforestation continue to pose serious threats, there is an urgent need to strengthen prevention measures and ensure the sustainable protection of forest ecosystems 🌳.
From 20 to 27 March 2025, the Integrated Water Resources Management and Ecosystem-Based Adaptation Project—supported by UNDP and the Global Environment Facility (GEF)—organized a training session on forest fire prevention and protection 🧯👨🚒 for local authorities from the three target districts. The training was held at the Savannakhet Provincial Government Office and aimed to equip local communities with the knowledge 📚 and tools 🛠️ necessary to effectively respond to forest fire incidents.
This initiative, which also included the provision of essential firefighting equipment 🚒, marks a crucial step toward enhancing forest management and climate resilience 🌤️. UNDP, in collaboration with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, remains committed to addressing these challenges through capacity building, equipment support, and the promotion of sustainable solutions for the protection and abundance of natural resources 🌱💧.
