News Full Description
From 14–20 September 2025, a monitoring and evaluation mission was conducted in five target districts of Savannakhet Province under the Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) and Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) project. The initiative is led by the Department of Water Resources (DWR), with technical and financial support from UNDP and the Global Environment Facility (GEF).

The IWRM-EbA project, running from 2022 to 2025, is designed to strengthen the resilience of communities in Lao PDR to climate risks, particularly floods and droughts, which are expected to intensify under changing climate conditions. By promoting integrated land and water resources management, the project contributes to sustainable development while safeguarding local livelihoods. During the mission, project teams conducted field visits to the five target districts to assess implementation progress, ensure activities are aligned with objectives, and provide technical advice to address emerging challenges.

A workshop was also held in Savannakhet with representatives from provincial, district, and village levels, including DWR, UNDP, and local agencies. The consultation provided an opportunity to validate ongoing activities, strengthen local ownership, and exchange feedback on ways to enhance project delivery. Stakeholders emphasized the importance of multi-stakeholder collaboration to ensure sustainable results and lasting impact. A highlight of the mission was the site visit to Keng Don Village in Sung Khone District, where the construction of a disaster relief center is underway. Once completed, the facility will improve disaster preparedness and response capacity, providing critical support for surrounding communities in times of emergency.

The mission concluded with key recommendations to address risks and bottlenecks, ensuring that project outcomes are achieved within the project timeline and sustained beyond completion. The activity reaffirmed the project’s commitment to helping communities adapt to climate change and build resilience against future disasters.
