Advancing Sustainable Integrated Water Resources Management and Ecosystem-Based Adaptation in Lao PDR
Project Location
Vientiane Capital, Lao PDR
Project Description
The Integrated Water Resources Management and Ecosystem-Based Adaptation (IWRM-EbA) Project, led by UNDP Lao PDR in partnership with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE), is a key initiative aimed at enhancing climate resilience and promoting the sustainable use of land and water resources in Lao PDR. Focusing on two highly vulnerable regions—the Xe Bang Hieng River Basin and Luang Prabang City—the project responds to the growing impacts of climate change, such as floods and droughts, which threaten both local communities and natural ecosystems. By adopting a nature-based approach, the project integrates ecosystem conservation with sustainable water resource management to improve water flow regulation, reduce flood risks, and maintain soil fertility. In addition to restoring natural ecosystems and improving water infrastructure, the project contributes directly to community well-being by expanding access to clean water, encouraging sustainable agricultural practices, and empowering local stakeholders to take part in decision-making processes. The IWRM-EbA Project strengthens collaboration among government agencies, development partners, and communities, combining scientific knowledge, traditional practices, and participatory planning to build a more resilient and environmentally sustainable future for Lao PDR.
Project Outcomes & Impacts
Advancing Sustainable Integrated Water Resources Management and Ecosystem-Based Adaptation in Lao PDR 🌏
On 3–4 April 2025, a National Workshop was held at the International Cooperation Training Centre (ICTC) in Vientiane, Lao PDR, organized by the Integrated Water Resources Management and Ecosystem-Based Adaptation (IWRM-EbA) Project under UNDP Lao PDR and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.
🔊 The workshop aimed to exchange knowledge and build a shared understanding of the critical role water plays in Lao PDR’s socio-economic development—while highlighting the need for sustainable water conservation. Key issues such as climate change, natural disasters, and inefficient water management were also addressed. 🔥🌪️💧
The event brought together a diverse group of participants, including representatives from UNDP, government ministries and departments from target provinces, international organizations, the private sector, media, as well as experts and development partners. Together, they focused on:
✅ Sharing best practices, experiences, and lessons learned
✅ Presenting progress updates and strategic plans
✅ Strengthening collaboration between communities, government, and development actors
✅ Promoting gender equality, environmental and social governance, and inclusive partnerships
This workshop marks a crucial step forward in building a unified foundation for sustainable water resource management and ecosystem-based adaptation in Lao PDR. The insights and outcomes are expected to inform effective policy implementation and boost resilience to future environmental challenges.
