Ensuring Clean and Safe Drinking Water for Communities

Project Location
SongKhone, XonnaBuri, Champhone, Nong, and Sepon Districts, Savannakhet Province.
Project Description
The Integrated Water Resources Management and Ecosystem-Based Adaptation (IWRM-EbA) Project is a collaborative initiative led by UNDP Lao PDR in partnership with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE). The project is focused on enhancing climate resilience and promoting the sustainable management of water and land resources in two of Laos’ most vulnerable regions: the Xe Bang Hieng River Basin and Luang Prabang City. These areas face increasing threats from extreme weather events, including floods and droughts, which pose risks to local communities, biodiversity, and ecosystems. Through a combination of nature-based solutions and policy-driven approaches, the project aims to strengthen water and land resource governance, restore degraded ecosystems, and implement measures that reduce climate-related risks. A significant focus is placed on protecting headwater forests and riparian zones, which are crucial for maintaining water security and supporting ecosystem health. Additionally, the project engages with local communities to raise awareness, build capacity, and support policy that promotes environmental stewardship and sustainable practices. This integrated approach contributes to a sustainable and climate-resilient future, ensuring the protection of natural resources and improving the livelihoods of local communities for future generations.
Project Outcomes & Impacts
From February 12–21, 2025, the Integrated Water Resources Management and Ecosystem-Based Adaptation (IWRM-EbA) project took a significant step toward improving water security by providing water filters to 15 target villages across five districts—Sung Khone, Chon Buri, Champhone, Nong, and Sepon—in Savannakhet Province. In collaboration with the Natural Resources and Environment Office teams and AQUA ECONEW, village authorities helped coordinate the installation and handover of the water filters, ensuring sustainable management and conservation for long-term community use.
✅ Objectives
💧 Provide water filters to 15 target villages, ensuring access to clean water and improved sanitation.
💧 Oversee the installation and handover of water filters to ensure proper usage and maintenance.
Access to clean water is a fundamental priority of our project, ensuring that communities have safe drinking water for daily life, better health, and resilience against water scarcity.
