Project Description
The Integrated Water Resources Management and Ecosystem-based Adaptation (IWRM-EbA) Project in Savannakhet Province is a collaborative initiative led by the Department of Water Resources, in partnership with provincial and district authorities, and supported by UNDP Lao PDR. The project aims to strengthen resilience to climate-induced floods and droughts through sustainable water resource management and the application of ecosystem-based adaptation strategies. Key interventions include the construction of groundwater wells equipped with solar-powered pumps and water storage systems, designed to provide reliable, year-round access to clean water for vulnerable communities. These efforts are complemented by the promotion of nature-based solutions and infrastructure that support local ecosystems while meeting community needs.

Beyond physical infrastructure, the project focuses on empowering local stakeholders through capacity building, technical guidance, and inclusive community engagement. By integrating scientific knowledge with local practices and priorities, the IWRM-EbA project contributes to long-term climate adaptation, improved water security, and environmental sustainability. It serves as a model for integrated, community-centered approaches to natural resource management in Lao PDR, paving the way for more resilient and self-sufficient rural communities in the face of increasing climate challenges.
Project Outcomes & Impacts
From 07 - 12 April 2025, the Department of Water Resources, in collaboration with the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Savannakhet Province, district-level offices, village authorities, and officer from UNDP Lao PDR, conducted a final site inspection of groundwater wells under the IWRM-EbA project.

🤩The Final inspection took place across target Districts of IWRM-EbA Project to monitor the progress of drilling and construction. With support from DML Irrigation, Bridge, and Infrastructure Design and Construction Company Limited, the team worked closely to ensure that construction meets the highest standards and contributes to the following goals:
✅Verify the quality and functionality of new 6 groundwater wells.
✅Ensure solar pumps and tanks are operational and meet project specifications.
✅Assess the overall construction quality and compliance with contractual agreements.
✅Advise local authorities and villagers on how to use and maintain the groundwater wells and their facilities

These groundwater wells are a vital step towards sustainable water resource management, helping communities adapt to the impacts of climate change while addressing environmental challenges.

By combining government efforts, community voices, and expert input, we’re building stronger, more resilient communities for a better future!
