Preventing Forest Fires and Protecting Luang Prabang’s Forests

Project Location
LuangPrabang City, LuangPrabang province
Project Description
The IWRM-EbA Project, led by UNDP Lao PDR in partnership with MONRE and supported by GEF, aims to enhance climate resilience and promote the sustainable management of land and water resources in Luang Prabang City and the Xe Bang Hieng River Basin. These regions face increasing risks from floods, droughts, and forest fires, which threaten both local communities and ecosystems. By integrating ecosystem conservation with water resource management, the project helps regulate water flow, reduce flood risks, and maintain soil fertility. It also strengthens local capacity, improves access to clean water, and promotes sustainable agricultural practices, ensuring long-term environmental sustainability and disaster risk reduction. Through collaboration with government agencies, development partners, and local communities, the project fosters a holistic approach to climate adaptation, balancing environmental protection with socio-economic development for a more resilient future.
Project Outcomes & Impacts
The increasing levels of PM2.5 dust and smog pose serious health and environmental risks. With rising deforestation and the growing threat of forest fires, urgent action is needed to enhance prevention strategies and promote sustainable forest management.

On March 6, 2025, the IWRM-EbA Project, supported by UNDP and GEF, organized a fire prevention training session 🔥 in Luang Prabang. As part of this initiative, 20 sets of essential firefighting equipment were handed over to local authorities, equipping communities with the knowledge and tools to respond swiftly to forest fires.

This effort marks a crucial step toward sustainable forest protection 🌿 and a healthier environment 🌎. UNDP in partnership with The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE) remains committed to strengthening local capacity, providing essential resources, and implementing long-term solutions to safeguard Laos' natural resources.
