Safeguarding Our Forests for a Sustainable Future

Project Location
MeungHong Village and NachanYai Village, Xonnabouly District, Savannakhet Province
Project Description
Forests are essential for sustaining ecosystems, supporting agriculture, and preserving biodiversity, yet they face growing threats from deforestation, unsustainable practices, and climate change. To address these challenges, the Integrated Water Resources Management and Ecosystem-Based Adaptation (IWRM-EbA) Project, led by UNDP Lao PDR in partnership with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE), is working to enhance climate resilience and promote sustainable forest management. On March 28-29, 2025, in Chonburi District, Savannakhet Province, the project organized an outreach and training session focused on restoring riparian forests, mitigating flood and drought risks, and ensuring responsible resource allocation. Through a participatory village forest allocation planning survey, local communities in Ban Najan Naing and Ban Muang Hong engaged in forest resource mapping, needs assessment, and collaborative management planning. A key outcome of the session was the establishment of a community-led committee to oversee and monitor forest conservation efforts, fostering local ownership and long-term sustainability. By restoring degraded ecosystems and promoting nature-based solutions, the project strengthens climate resilience while empowering communities to take an active role in safeguarding their natural resources for future generations
Project Outcomes & Impacts
The Integrated Water Resources Management and Ecosystem-Based Adaptation (IWRM-EbA) Project successfully enhanced forest conservation through strategic planning, community engagement, and sustainable management practices. Key outcomes include:

Enhanced Forest Management – A structured forest allocation system was established in Ban Najan Naing and Ban Muang Hong, ensuring sustainable use and long-term conservation of forest resources. πŸŒ³πŸ“

Community-Led Governance – A local forest management committee was formed, empowering communities to oversee and monitor conservation efforts, fostering long-term stewardship and sustainability. πŸ‘₯🌱

Participatory Planning & Resource Mapping – Local communities actively contributed to forest resource mapping and needs assessment, ensuring conservation strategies align with their livelihoods and long-term sustainability. πŸ‘πŸ—ΊοΈ

Increased Climate Resilience – By integrating nature-based solutions, the project strengthened the ability of forests to mitigate climate impacts, preserving essential ecosystem services and supporting biodiversity. πŸŒŽπŸ’š

These outcomes reinforce the importance of community-driven conservation, ensuring that forest resources remain protected for future generations
