Strengthening Climate Resilience Through ICFMS Implementation in Six Target Districts: Champhone, Songkhone, Xonnabouly, Sepone, Nong, and Luang PrabangCity
Project Location
Phika Village, Champhone Districrt, Savannakhet Province
Project Description
Lao PDR is increasingly experiencing severe and frequent climate-related hazards, particularly floods and droughts, which pose significant risks to vulnerable communities, agricultural livelihoods, and ecosystems. These impacts are especially pronounced in the six target districts of Champhone, Songkhone, Xonnabouly, Sepone, Nong, and Luang Prabang City, situated within the Xe Bang Hieng River Basin and its surrounding areas. In response to these challenges, the Department of Water Resources (DWR), in partnership with UNDP Lao PDR and supported by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), is advancing the implementation of the Integrated Climate-Resilient Flood and Drought Management Strategy (ICFMS). This initiative aims to embed climate resilience into local development planning and resource management to mitigate the adverse effects of climate variability. A key milestone in this effort is the upcoming Consultation Workshop, scheduled for 27 May 2025 in Champhone District, Savannakhet Province. The workshop will serve as a platform for collaboration among local and national authorities, technical experts, and stakeholders to review progress, share knowledge, and align on practical approaches for effective strategy implementation. By fostering dialogue and partnership, this project supports the development of actionable plans, monitoring frameworks, and financing pathways, thereby strengthening the capacity of districts to respond proactively to climate risks. The endeavor reflects a broader commitment by UNDP and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE) to promote climate-smart development and build a safer, more resilient future for the people of Lao PDR.
Project Outcomes & Impacts
Strengthening Climate Resilience Through ICFMS Implementation in Six Target Districts: Champhone, Songkhone, Xonnabouly, Sepone, Nong, and Luang PrabangCity 🌧️🌿
As Lao PDR faces more intense and frequent floods and droughts, climate resilience has become a national priority. These climate impacts threaten communities, agriculture, and ecosystems—especially in vulnerable districts across the XeBang Hieng River Basin and Luang Prabang City. 🌾💦
On 27 May 2025, the Department of Water Resources (DWR), in collaboration with UNDP Lao PDR and support from the Global Environment Facility (GEF), will host a Consultation Workshop on the Implementation of the Integrated Climate-Resilient Flood and Drought Management Strategy (ICFMS). Held in Champhone District, SavannakhetProvince, the event brings together local and national authorities to transform strategies into actions. 🛠️📋
Through technical presentations, group discussions, and planning sessions, this workshop will:
✅ Identify priority climate adaptation activities
✅ Integrate ICFMS into 5-year district development plans
✅ Establish monitoring frameworks
✅ Explore funding mechanisms for long-term resilience
This collaborative effort is a key step toward ensuring that local communities are equipped, informed, and supported in managing climate-related risks. 🌍🤝 UNDP and MONRE remain committed to advancing climate-smart planning, resource mobilization, and inclusive development for a safer, more resilient future in Lao PDR.
