Strengthening Climate Resilience through Wetland and Riverbank Protection in Savannakhet Province
Wetland modification and riverbank stabilization play a crucial role in managing water flows, reducing erosion, and enhancing natural water retention, while protecting settlements, agricultural land, and vital ecosystems. In recent years, communities in Nong, Sepon, and Xonnabouly districts have faced growing challenges due to floods and prolonged dry spells, which have affected livelihoods, infrastructure, and ecosystem stability. By implementing these nature-based interventions, the IWRM–EbA Project, supported by GEF and UNDP, helps strengthen climate resilience, safeguard communities, and maintain the ecological functions of rivers, wetlands, and adjacent lands.
During this field monitoring mission, the project team will closely supervise the construction works to ensure compliance with approved designs, technical standards, and quality requirements. Soil samples will be collected at selected construction sites for laboratory testing to verify material suitability and compaction, ensuring that the infrastructure is durable and effective under changing climatic conditions.
In addition to technical supervision, the mission emphasizes community engagement and participation. The project team will conduct consultations with affected communities to ensure that residents understand the objectives and benefits of the interventions, and to encourage active participation in protecting and maintaining the infrastructure. These consultations also provide an opportunity to identify concerns, gather local knowledge, and strengthen community ownership of the projects.
The field visit will also verify that environmental and social safeguard measures are being implemented in accordance with project frameworks and national regulations. Coordination with local authorities, supervising engineers, and construction contractors will ensure that potential risks are managed, and corrective measures are promptly addressed where necessary.
This activity represents a collaborative effort between DWR, UNDP, provincial and district authorities, contractors, and local communities. Through the support of GEF and UNDP, the project links ecosystem protection with sustainable, climate-resilient infrastructure to reduce flood and drought risks, enhance natural resource management, and improve community preparedness. These interventions contribute to a more resilient landscape in Savannakhet Province, safeguarding lives, livelihoods, and ecosystems against the impacts of climate change.
