“⚠️ Tropical Cyclone FENGSHEN Approaches: Heavy Rainfall and Strong Winds Expected in Central and Southern Laos”
The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology (DMH) has issued a severe weather warning as Tropical Cyclone FENGSHEN moves westward at 20 km/h. The storm is expected to reach the coast of Guangdong, China, by the evening and early morning of October 21, 2025, and may strengthen slightly as it approaches Hainan Island on October 22, before continuing toward central and southern Vietnam.
In Laos, central and southern regions are forecasted to experience light to moderate thunderstorms, while provinces including Vientiane Capital, Xaysomboun, Vientiane, Bolikhamxay, Khammouane, Savannakhet, Saravan, Sekong, Champasak, and Attapeu may face heavy to very heavy rainfall with strong winds during October 23–24, 2025 🌧️💨.
The cyclone poses significant risks, including flash floods 🌊, urban flooding, landslides ⛰️, and erosion, particularly in low-lying and hilly areas. Infrastructure such as roads, bridges, and power lines may be damaged, and disruptions to water supply, transportation, agriculture, and livelihoods are likely.
Prevention and Preparedness Tips 🏠:
Residents are urged to stay informed via official DMH updates 📻📱, prepare emergency kits with water, non-perishable food, medicines, flashlights, and important documents, and secure homes by reinforcing roofs, windows, and doors. Families near rivers, floodplains, or slopes should know the location of the nearest evacuation centers 🏢 and avoid crossing flooded roads or streams. It is also important to check on vulnerable neighbors, including the elderly, children, and people with disabilities.
Local authorities and organizations should activate disaster response plans, inspect and maintain infrastructure, coordinate with emergency services 🚑🚒, provide clear public warnings, and advise farmers and businesses on protective measures. Residents are reminded to avoid unnecessary travel, follow instructions from authorities, and prioritize life over property.
The DMH emphasizes safety as the top priority. Communities and individuals are strongly encouraged to remain vigilant, prepare for several days of heavy rain and strong winds, and monitor updates as Tropical Cyclone FENGSHEN passes through Laos.
Stay alert, stay safe! ⚠️
